Audit Apprenticeship - September Overview Audit means much more than crunching numbers. Auditors are integral to keeping the UK financial system safe for investors and the public. As auditors we use smart questions to get to know our client’s businesses, and maintain scepticism throughout the audit process to ensure we remain impartial. At the completion of an audit we can provide constructive feedback to our clients helping to improve the business’s operations, whilst also helping shareholders to have a full understanding of a company’s financial performance and business risks. As the majority of the audit process involves us working in different teams, with people at varying stages of their career, we’re fortunate to get to know our BDO colleagues really well and often become life-long friends. An Audit Trainee will form part of the audit team both on-site at clients, and in the office, ensuring that all aspects of the audit are completed on time and within budget. You will be expected to study for, and complete, your accounting qualification over the  and will be supported, developed and supervised by senior members of the Audit Group. BDO offer the globally recognised Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA) qualification as a Level 7 apprenticeship programme, enabling individuals to become qualified chartered accountants and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The ACA qualification and apprenticeship provides a broad range of accounting, finance and business skills. It opens a wealth of opportunities. The duration of this programme is 48 months. Business Area Overview • You will assist within the wider team by obtaining audit evidence necessary to support opinions given • Prepare analysis of accounting data from client’s books and records • Ensure audit files have all relevant documentation on the appropriate section; check appropriate and sufficient documentation obtained to support the opinion and documenting all conclusions • Active engagement with client staff in the gathering of appropriate audit evidence • Active adherence to budget and timetable, bringing matters to the attention of the Senior or Manager, particularly when actual time is in excess of budget • Involvement in the planning, execution and finalisation of the audit assignment supporting the Audit Manager • Ensure compliance with internal (audit methodology and risk management) and external (regulatory) requirements • Identify and understand client needs, including sometimes providing initial solutions to client challenges, then communicating these needs and solutions to your Senior or Manager • Build strong relationships with new and established clients • Carry out ad hoc assignments, as may be required by your group • Undertake any training or development co-ordinated by your group • Coaching and assisting more junior trainees on the team, both at client premises and in the office • Participate in group, stream and firm wide activities • Successfully study towards your professional qualification and, where relevant, corresponding apprenticeship Requirements Candidates must have, or be on course for the following grades (or international equivalent): •3 A Levels at grades A*- C, excluding General Studies and Extended Projects •Grade 9-4 in English Language & Maths GCSE We are looking for candidates who possess strengths that are aligned to: Business Thinking, Collaborating, Innovation and Change, Communicating, Developing Self and others, Decision Making, Reasoned judgement, and Analytical skills. JOB PURPOSE As a trainee in our Advisory Tax Team, your time will be split between working on client projects, business development and studying for your professional exams. Our Advisory Tax Team focuses on our corporate and private clients, meeting their tax advisory needs in an environment of fast paced economic change, combined with complex and changing legislation both in the UK and overseas. Our corporate clients range from listed multinationals to domestic owner managed businesses. While our private clients include entrepreneurs, high net worth individuals and owner/shareholders of our corporate clients. The role will be primarily office based, but with regular opportunities to attend client or other advisors offices, as well as other Mazars offices both in the UK and overseas. The Advisory Tax Team often find themselves at the vanguard of the client relationship, therefore the role will develop not only your tax technical skills, but also the wider project management of multi-disciplinary projects. The role will therefore provide an opportunity to work with colleagues in different tax disciplines and other service lines across our organisation. In this way you will gain a broad understanding of the specialist services we can offer to our clients, the value of this advice to them and their businesses and the way that the different streams of work interact with each other and with the wider practice.  By the end of your final year, you will have had the opportunity to: Work on a range of different advisory engagements across UK tax covering a range of technical areas Develop a strong technical knowledge of the UK tax legislation, specifically across corporate and personal taxes Coach and lead more junior team members on advisory engagements Understand the way in which different corporate entities operate across a range of sectors, as well as the different challenges facing our private client customer base in terms of managing tax risk, estate/succession planning and the implications  of being internationally mobile Work directly with our clients and begin developing relationships with those clients to deliver on repeat engagements Begin to manage advisory engagements, including planning, budgeting and project managing different service lines Develop a strong understanding of our control and risk management procedures  THE PERSON Interpersonal skills; the ability to build client relationships with a foundation of trust and responsibility. After successful completion of this you will go onto study the combined ACA/CTA qualification.  You will receive a full study package to ensure that you successfully complete your professional qualification. This includes time off to study, attend college and complete online courses.
