Job Description

Deadline: Ongoing

Salary: Competitive

Location: Exeter

This is your opportunity to join a bespoke civil engineering site management degree apprenticeship created in partnership between Laing O’Rourke and the University of Exeter.

We are looking for exceptional people to fill civil engineering roles predominantly (but not exclusively) at our Hinkley Point C project while studying part-time for a debt-free BEng degree at a highly-ranked Russell Group University.

You’ll become professionally qualified as well to Technician (EngTech) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status

What is a Degree Apprenticeship?

Degree apprenticeships are a new way of studying. They offer a fully-funded pathway to higher education and professional qualification paid for by the government and the employer; students aren’t required to pay any tuition fees.

The degree apprenticeship uniquely combines the undergraduate university experience with paid employment and industrial experience. As a graduate of this programme, you can expect to leave with a full University of Exeter degree, professional qualifications, zero student debt and a job. You will have full membership of the University, extending to academic, welfare and career support as well as access to societies and sports clubs where these fit with your employment.

Programme Structure

The BEng Civil Engineering Site Management degree apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of residential courses, blended learning and work-based projects over five years.

Each residential will last a fortnight (so eight weeks per academic year at university) and during this time you will attend lectures, seminars, participate in workshops and spend time with your academic mentor.

The academic curriculum will, for a large part, follow real delivery in the workplace with the day-to-day challenges faced in a work environment informing coursework. Blended elements of the course, including lectures and online collaborative work, are supported by the University’s virtual learning environment. This will supplement and enhance the learning started during your residential study weeks, as well as providing academic support for ongoing projects in the workplace.

Alongside your study, you will work full-time in a civil engineering role on one of Laing O’Rourke’s projects around the UK. At work you’ll be given a mentor to help you work towards professional accreditation at Technician Engineer level after the first two years study, and Incorporated Engineer level when you’ve completed the degree. You’ll be part of a team on site, and you’ll have access to some of our senior engineering leaders throughout the apprenticeship. So there’s plenty of support in place for you.
