Job Title: Supply Chain Management Apprenticeship

Location: Port Talbot & Llanwern (Newport)

Salary: £12,600

Length of Apprenticeship: 2 years

Supply Chain is an exciting, fast moving and rewarding place to work.  The Tata Steel Europe Supply Chain team has over 350 people working in various sites across the UK, Mainland Europe & US.

As a Supply Chain Management Apprentice you will have a direct impact on the business results.  You will use data and information about our supply chain to maximise ‘on time’ delivery performance and positively impact customer satisfaction.  You will play a part in achieving the optimal levels of inventory to achieve customer service levels and to meet business working capital and cash targets.  You will contribute to reducing the costs within the supply chain by enabling efficient manufacture and making efficient use of transport resources.  You will develop your knowledge and understanding of complex supply chains and processes as you immerse yourself in the Supply Chain ways of working at Tata Steel.  You will be exposed to leading edge technologies as we develop our digital supply chains.

During the training programme, apprentices will learn about the different processes and roles within the Supply Chain department. You will gain a strong appreciation of the business products, processes and the services that we provide.

The Supply Chain Management apprenticeship will be based at both sites in Llanwern and Port Talbot.  The exact split will be agreed with the successful candidates recognising their location and the business needs.

Requirements:


You’ll need to have 5 GCSEs or equivalent (including English, Maths and Science) at Grades A* - C or level 4-9   

And

Have or are expected to achieve 3 A-Levels or equivalent at Grades A* - C.  Maths/Sciences/Business Studies/ Economics would be an advantage but are not mandatory.

Key skills required include good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word

 

Supply Chain Management Overview:

During the 2 year apprenticeship year you will study towards a Level 3 NVQ in Supply Chain Management. Study will be through work based assessments, no day release to college. There will be a review at the end of year 2 to determine potential to extend your apprenticeship further to allow study to  level 5 qualifications.

Most of the work will be office based with travel to manufacturing areas, downstream operations and external warehouses, docks as required by the work placement.

The Supply Chain apprenticeship will provide you with a wide range of experiences across different departments within the function.  The apprenticeship will include 4 placements of 6 months duration in Order Management, Factory Planning, Scheduling & Logistics Operations giving broad exposure to Supply Chain processes and interfaces with other key business functions including Sales, Customer Services, Manufacturing and Technical teams.  

  • Order Management: Creation, amendment & progress of production orders to deliver customer service levels and maintain designed stock buffers.  Close interaction with customers, commercial teams, planners and schedulers to achieve service & inventory targets.
  • Factory Planning: Creating the short to medium term operations plans for Port Talbot and Llanwern production facilities, balancing customer orders against manufacturing capacity to achieve customer service levels, efficient material flow, maintain inventory targets and support efficient manufacturing performance.  
  • Scheduling: Translating the operational plans into detailed manufacturing schedules to achieve customer service levels, efficient material flow, maintain inventory targets and support efficient manufacturing performance working closely with manufacturing teams and planning.
  • Logistics Operations: Planning and executing the safe transport and storage of finished goods to customers around the globe, the movement of material in process between Tata Steel production sites and the inbound flow of raw materials by rail, road & sea.  Managing the safety, cost and service levels across a complex global Logistics network including Tata Steel warehouses, external warehouses, customer premises, docks, rail operations, haulage operations and shipping operations. 

With training, apprentices will have the opportunity to progress to a wide range of roles across the Supply Chain function including Scheduler, Material Flow Controller, Slab Applications Controller, Factory Planning Controller, Replenishment Controller, Inventory Controller (Logistics).  There are many opportunities beyond this for individuals to develop the required skills and experience to enable further career progression within the Supply Chain function.
