As a Laing O’Rourke apprentice you will work through a structured programme that will take between two and four years depending on your apprenticeship choice. The programme will combine practical onsite experience, academic learning at college and a series of bespoke personal development modules.
As part of the Apprenticeship+ programme, you will be expected to achieve an NVQ 2, plus a technical certificate in your chosen discipline. You will attend college on either a block or day release format, depending on the college you are assigned to.
Your apprenticeship journey will be supported by experienced tradespeople and construction professionals, with a dedicated mentor and apprentice officer that will work closely with you, providing regular feedback on your progress towards completing your apprenticeship.
In this role, you will be responsible for the construction of the steel reinforcement which forms a vital part of any concrete structure. You will work with various diameters of steel that will need to be cut to length, bent to shape and fixed together, following the exact specification shown in the drawings or digital model. The work will be predominantly outdoors and you will be required to work closely with our Formwork Carpenters and Concrete Operatives to ensure productivity is maximised. On-site training and experience will be complemented by an extensive construction college apprenticeship programme that will lead to you becoming a competent Steel Fixer.
We are looking for people with a genuine interest in construction. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and ambitious, with the potential to progress to a supervisory / management role over a five-to-ten-year period.
You should be on target to achieve or have achieved at least 3 passes at GCSE or a minimum of six months’ experience in construction. This is predominantly outdoor work and applicants must also have a good head for heights.
