Our Field Engineers are responsible for building, installing, and maintaining the broadband network for all different types of customers. We work on behalf of a variety of different communications providers, as support residential customers as well as businesses.
Being a Field Engineer is a really varied job. You’ll be visiting lots of different places and working in all kinds of buildings including our telephone exchanges – our central hubs for connecting customers. You might find yourself working at a street cabinet, up a telegraph pole or in the customers’ premises.
Our Engineers are all customer focused and a lot of the work is done alone. But you’re never really alone as you’ll be interacting with customers, getting together with your team, and there’s always people for support at the end of the phone - from your manager and team mates to dedicated teams there to help. It’s nothing to worry about either, we’ll make sure to train you up to give you all the skills you’ll need to get the job done
Before you decide to apply, it’s worth mentioning that the type of work you’ll be carrying out will be physical - for example you might be required to climb a telegraph pole and work at height, or carry a ladder. This isn’t an office job either, so you won’t be tied to one location. Instead you’ll be on the road, in your van and out in the fresh air, come rain or shine.
There's no such thing as a typical engineer; between us we’ve got diverse backgrounds and varied experiences. As long as you can connect with people, like solving problems and are willing to get stuck in, you’ll fit right in.
As a Field Engineer for Openreach in Norther Ireland, you’ll study for a Level 3 apprenticeship in IT Software, Web & Telecoms. If you complete the course successfully, you’ll receive Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals and a Level 3 Diploma in ICT Systems and Principles.
