Our Apprentice Power Planners are always busy and on the go. They’re always getting involved in a wide variety of situations across our communications network. If that sounds like you, then you might be a buddying Power Planner in the making!
Apprentice Power Technicians are part of our amazing Engineering Services team. They’re the ones that plan, build and maintain our telephone exchanges and radio sites across the UK, as well as our data centres – basically the ones that allow us to keep doing what we do best, providing telecoms services to the world. Our exchanges all need power to keep them going and as an Apprentice Power Planner you’ll be responsible for ensuring just that.
Everything in a telephone exchange needs power and your job as an Apprentice Power Planner is to find the space and capacity for any new equipment or upgrades to existing telephone exchanges or data centres. You’ll develop the skills and knowledge to create plans for new apparatus on both AC and DC power systems, as well as plan for the safe install or replacement of engines and customer equipment.
On the job, you’ll learn about the principles relating to the operation and maintenance of appropriate plant and equipment, health and safety standards and environmental and regulatory requirements. You’ll also learn a range of engineering theories and principles that you can apply to pretty much anything! Some the time you’ll be working in the office, but you’ll also get an opportunity to visit telephone exchanges to carry out on-site surveys and meet with external suppliers.
We’re not expecting you to know about all of our systems and products right away. We’ll teach you what you need to know to work safely on electrical and mechanical power systems that run our large network, and make sure you’re trained to industry standards.
Without our Power Planners, our network would never benefit from the new technologies we develop. You’ll start off getting valuable hands on experience as a Power engineer, learning how all of the equipment works, which will compliment your role as a planning apprentice. Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll join a team responsible for the implementation and design of all of our capacity and power systems within our exchanges and data centres, literally keeping our network running.
