We’re looking for engineers with an ability to connect with people, and a willingness to get stuck in. Don’t be put off from applying because you haven’t done something similar before - we have the best training in the business to equip you with the new skills you need. If you’re the type of person who likes fixing problems and is passionate about customer service, then we want you to apply. We’re looking for people who are: Able to make a connection with our customers in their workplaces and homes. Happy working outdoors. Whether it’s glorious sunshine or bracing British weather, our engineers are out connecting people. Open to new technology. Nothing too scary and we’ll always support you, but you need to be comfortable using smart devices and ready to learn as new tools emerge. Ready to give their best. The sort of person who always sees a job through and takes pride in doing it properly. Physically fit. You don’t need to be a marathon runner, but will need to be fit enough to safely climb a telephone pole and carry a ladder. Prepared to roll up their sleeves. Working in the great outdoors on our network means getting your hands dirty from time to time. Able to manage their time as well as their workload. This is critical, our customers rely on us and we need individuals who are truly committed to delivering service. What does an engineer do? As one of our engineers you could be responsible for building our network, or installing and maintaining broadband for our customers – covering residential customers as well as businesses on behalf of a variety of communication providers. This isn’t an office job so you won’t be tied to one location. Instead you’ll be on the road, in your van and out in the fresh air. You’ll be visiting lots of different places and working in all kinds of buildings including our telephone exchanges – our central hubs for connecting customers. You might find yourself working at a street cabinet, up a telegraph pole or in the customers’ premises. The type of work you’ll be carrying out will be physical, for example you might be required to climb a telegraph pole and work at height. This is a customer focused role so quite a lot of the work is done alone, but you’re never really alone as you’ll be interacting with customers, getting together with your team and there’s always people for support at the end of the phone - from your manager and team mates to dedicated teams there to help.  Does this sound like the career for you? Great! You’ll need to go through a few pre-employment checks before you can start - you’ll need a full driving licence with no more than six points on it and you’ll need to pass our colour-blindness checks. The standard working week is 37.5 hours. Your attendance pattern can require you to attend on any day from Monday to Sunday and your start and finish times can be between 07:00 and 21:00.   A brilliant first 12 months… Interested in taking on the best 12 month training and learning programme to kick-start your successful career as an engineer? Don’t be put off from applying because you haven’t done anything similar before, you'll get loads of support, and if successful, after the first year you’ll have achieved a qualification for IT and Telecoms professionals*. Here’s what the first 12 months might look like: Our first class training for the role begins right away with a two week induction at our flagship training site - Yarnfield Park near Stafford. In the first week we’ll get you ready for the role; giving you the equipment you need and the health and safety training that’ll be the foundation of your whole career with us. Week two we’ll get you started; you’ll have a full induction to Openreach and take our interactive customer training which will include learning how to provide great customer service – this will be hugely important throughout your career. By the end of week two you’ll even have climbed a pole or two. The first few weeks will involve some residential training. Week three to around week 12 will involve a mixture of classroom learning in our dedicated training centres and practising out in the field with an experienced engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain some great insight into the role and raise any questions you may have with your coaches or experienced engineers. The mixture of learning inside and out in the field will allow you to maximise your training by practicing what you’ve been learnt as you go along.  After about three months you’ll be on the road as a confident trainee engineer, out in your van and working in the field. This is when you’ll really develop, refining your skills, whilst still receiving all the support you need. Once you have completed the full 12 months you’ll have gained your qualification and set up for a successful career with us. The opportunity to grow and progress your career as a field engineer will be in your hands.
